New Brighton Beach

06-23-13

The clouds have rolled away, the snow has come and gone, and the rain has finally cleared. What a beautiful day it was today here in Christchurch! Clear skies led us to the coast after we discovered the Sunday Market was closed. We drove the 45 minute car ride to New Brighton Beach in Christchurch where Heather, Piers, the boys, and myself were able to stroll down the pier that paved the way to some of the most perfect waves I've ever seen.

Jaw dropping, 4 ft+, glassy waves were rolling in one right after the other, forming perfect lines down the horizon. As we reached the pier's end, I caught a glimpse of a surfboard's tail in the air, on the opposite side of the pier railing. I told Heather to look just before it disappeared with its owner into the surging, 50 degree waves beneath. She couldn't believe it. We soon discovered he was only 15 years old local Kiwi. Awesome.
The current was so strong that the boy became ant sized within minutes as he fought to get past the breakers.
We stayed for a while, mesmerized by the walls of water that kept gliding towards us.
Ethan would have jumped off too if it weren't for the railing jailing him in.
Peelers in the background! There were a few local fishermen out catching dinner with their ever so massive poles.
Mountains trace the water's edge in many places here, redefining my future dream home location.
What a beautiful place!
After gaping for a while longer at the surf, we made our way down to the beach alongside the pier.
As soon as we hit the sand a rogue wave came crashing in and we all shrieked while Ethan got really excited and then extremely disappointed as he was lifted away from its grasp and we all toppled into the dunes. It was a close one.

I did a small photo shoot of the family because the lighting was too marvelous to pass up. Here are a couple.

It was a perfect day on the coast. I can't wait until I get a board and get out there myself!

<3 thanks for reading!
